3 Meal Planning Tips

As the new year approaches and we set our new year’s resolutions, a super popular one is (you guessed it!) making health and fitness more of a priority. Many of us start out strong in January, completely set on losing weight, eating healthier, and feeding our families more homemade meals.

Sound familiar?

One way to make this new year’s resolution actually stick is to start out with a plan–for both your fitness AND nutrition. Because, honestly, if we fail to plan…we can plan to fail. So let’s start out 2016 on the right foot, meal-wise. Planning meals ahead of time helps eliminate the frustration of making meals, and frees up more time to spend with your family instead of stressing over what’s for dinner. Here are a few tips as you take on meal planning.

  1. Progress Over Perfection

To start, pick one meal a day to plan and build a meal foundation. Make current favorites healthier, then make those healthy meals tastier. It’s not very realistic to attempt a total over-haul of your eating without focused guidance. It can be truly overwhelming to navigate the hundreds of recipe websites out there for meal ideas. It’s like at the end of the day, when all the kids are finally sleeping and you have the coveted opportunity to watch some grown-up content uninterrupted…only to spend 45 minutes searching through Netflix unable to choose something. Anything. Geez. Don’t let the Netflix-abyss-phenomenon apply to your healthy eating efforts!!

2. Shop For The Week

Have a thought-out, planned list. Whether you’re taking the kids with you on your shopping expedition or not (but seriously…especially if you’re taking the kids with you), having a shopping list keeps your time in the store more focused, saving you time and money.

3. Have A Back-Up Plan

Plan ahead for those nights (or days) you won’t have time to throw something new together. Cook in bulk, keep extra meals in the freezer, and have staple ingredients on hand always (frozen veggies, frozen meats, quick-cooking rice/quinoa, canned soups).
